HGTC Donates to Backpack Buddies

HR team dropping off food

Horry-Georgetown Technical College (HGTC) employees and students collected thousands of non-perishable food items and other donations for Backpack Buddies during the month of October.  Several employees delivered the items on Halloween Day to help feed children living in poverty.

The HGTC collection could not have come at a better time as Help 4 Kids/Backpack Buddies reported a temporary cancellation in assistance due to a shortage of supplies.

“I am very proud of the efforts of our employees and students to help children in need right here in our local community. It is hard to imagine the number of underprivileged Horry County children who may go hungry because of a lack of food. I am grateful to those who helped restock the supplies that were completely exhausted,” said Dr. Marilyn Murphy Fore, HGTC President.

The collection for Backpack Buddies was part of the HGTC Human Resources wellness initiative for October. Employees and students were encouraged to donate to the cause. The response was astounding with thousands of items donated for Backpack Buddies.

“The HGTC donation could not have been delivered at a better time for the Backpack Buddies program.  We supply 2,600 bags to 40 schools for children each week and, due to supply chain issues and shortages, we have had difficulties getting enough food. I am so thankful for what we received from HGTC employees and students. The donations will help us continue our mission of helping children in need,” said Barb Mains, Founder and Director of Help 4 Kids/Backpack Buddies.
