Coastal Carolina men’s basketball secured a 79-75 overtime win against Georgia Southern on Saturday at the Jack and Ruth Ann Hill Convocation Center in Statesboro, Georgia. The victory was highlighted by Rasheed Jones scoring a career-high 28 points and Derrick Green forcing overtime with a key putback in the final seconds of regulation.
The Chanticleers had not won in Statesboro since 2022, while the Eagles suffered their first home loss of the season. Coastal Carolina trailed at halftime, 40-33, and spent much of the game behind before tying it up late. With three seconds left in regulation and down by one point, Joshua Beadle intentionally missed a free throw after making his first attempt. Green collected the offensive rebound and scored to tie the game at 70-70.
“We talked about how hard it is to win here,” CCU Head Coach Justin Gray said. “I tell our guys all the time; to be ready for the moment, you must have been doing the work before. We practiced the free throw miss yesterday. Coach Allison did a great job with prepping the guys on that.
“Joshua Beadle went out and executed the perfect miss, and Derrick came up with the offensive rebound and putback. That gave us life and a chance in overtime.”
In overtime, Beadle scored first for Coastal Carolina, which then relied on defensive stops and free throws to secure the win. AJ Dancler made an important jumper with just over a minute remaining to give Coastal a two-point lead, while Jones sealed the outcome from the free throw line.
Jones finished with 28 points on efficient shooting and contributed eight rebounds. Dancler recorded a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Beadle added 18 points. Green’s performance included four offensive rebounds, including his crucial basket at the end of regulation.
Georgia Southern was led by Tyren Moore’s 34 points but could not maintain its lead in overtime. The Eagles shot 25-of-70 from the field compared to Coastal’s strong performance at the free throw line (31-of-38). Coastal also won the rebounding battle by eight boards.
With this result, Coastal Carolina improved its record to 11-9 overall and evened its Sun Belt Conference mark at 4-4 through eight games—matching its best start since 2022-23 when it also stood at .500 after eight conference contests. The team has now posted four consecutive road wins for the first time since the 2015-16 season and has achieved its longest winning streak since March of 2022.
The Chanticleers will next play Texas State at home on Thursday, January 22.
