Coastal Carolina defeated The Citadel 5-3 on May 12 in the regular-season home finale at Springs Brooks Stadium.
The win was important for Coastal Carolina as it marked a comeback from an early three-run deficit and improved their overall record. This result also kept the Chanticleers strong in Sun Belt Conference play.
The game began with The Citadel scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. Coastal Carolina responded in the bottom of the second when Blake Barthol hit a solo home run, his 39th career homer, tying him for fifth-most in program history. In the third inning, Rex Watson doubled to drive in Trace Mazon, and Walker Mitchell followed with an RBI single to tie the score at three.
Domenico Tozzi gave Coastal Carolina its first lead with a solo home run in the seventh inning. Later that inning, Watson added another RBI single to bring Ty Barrango home for an insurance run. Both Watson and Barthol recorded two hits each during the game.
Case Bosch earned the win by pitching two scoreless innings out of the bullpen, striking out four batters while allowing three hits and one walk. Ryan Lynch secured the save by retiring all three batters he faced without giving up a hit.
With this victory, Coastal Carolina moved to a 35-17 overall record and remained at 20-7 within conference play. The team will finish its regular season with a three-game series against Louisiana starting Thursday night.
