Congressman Russell Fry announced that the Federal Law Enforcement Officer Service Weapon Purchase Act has been passed by the House Judiciary Committee. The current law mandates federal agencies to destroy retired firearms, rendering them inoperable. This procedure incurs significant costs for the federal government and ultimately affects taxpayers. The new act aims to allow current and retired federal law enforcement officers to purchase these retired firearms, offering both financial savings and benefits to law enforcement personnel.
Congressman Fry stated, “The Federal Law Enforcement Officer Service Weapon Purchase Act not only saves American taxpayers millions of dollars but also creates a system in which law enforcement officers in good standing can exercise their Second Amendment rights by purchasing their retired service weapons.”
This legislation has received endorsements from several organizations, including the National Association of Police Organizations, the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association, the National Treasury Employees Union, and the FBI Agents Association. Mathew Silverman, President of the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association, commended the bill stating it “serves as a force multiplier in our communities, reduces material waste, and saves taxpayer dollars.”
Bill Johnson, Executive Director of the National Association of Police Organizations, highlighted the cost-saving aspect of the bill, expressing gratitude for Fry’s leadership. Similarly, Doreen Greenwald, National President of the National Treasury Employees Union, mentioned the timing of the bill during Police Week as highly fitting, showcasing respect and professionalism for federal officers.
Natalie Bara, President of the FBI Agents Association, expressed hope for swift legislative action, emphasizing the recognition of responsibility and commitment to public safety inherent in the bill. Several other law enforcement and related organizations voiced their support through a letter to the House Judiciary Committee.
