Myrtle Beach is getting more sand, but not in time for this summer… The US Army Corps of Engineers is awarding $56 million to the Grand Strand for a full beach renourishment to repair damage from Hurricane Ian last fall. The federal government is funding 100-percent of the renourishment expense for nearly 27 miles of our coastline. In a news release, the Corps of Engineers said the City of Myrtle Beach will receive 650,000 cubic yards of sand, or the equivalent of 65,000 dump trucks. Actual pumping of sand along the coast is not expected until later this year, at the earliest. The design-and-coordination phase will take six to nine months, so we won’t have a new beach this season. Myrtle Beach’s last renourishment occurred in 2018.
