Old Dominion defeated No. 8 Coastal Carolina 6-3 on May 9, evening the Sun Belt Conference baseball series at one game each.
The outcome is significant as it sets up a decisive third game in the three-game weekend series between the two teams. Both teams are competing for positioning within the conference standings.
After falling behind early, Coastal Carolina responded in the second inning when Trace Mazon hit an RBI single to bring home Rex Watson and cut Old Dominion’s lead to 3-1. In the third inning, Walker Mitchell hit an RBI double that scored Dean Mihos, narrowing the gap further. Brice Estep tied the game with his eighth home run of the season in the fourth inning.
Old Dominion regained control in the fifth inning and added two more runs in the sixth while holding Coastal Carolina scoreless over the final five innings. The loss dropped Coastal Carolina’s record to 34-16 overall and 20-6 in Sun Belt Conference play.
The teams will play again Sunday at Springs Brooks Stadium to decide who wins this weekend’s series.
