Georgetown County: Grant will bring high-speed internet to all areas of the county

Ddaa

Georgetown County issued the following announcement on August 16.

A $9.8 million USDA grant will allow high-speed internet to be brought to nearly 3,000 homes in rural areas, including Georgetown County. The announcement was made Aug. 11 by Horry Telephone Cooperative, which received the grant and plans to use funds to extend service to 2,889 households, 11 educational facilities, three essential community facilities, 41 farms and 80 businesses in rural parts of its service area.

The grants are part of $550 million Congress allocated to the second round of the ReConnect Program, as well as other funds made available for the program since 2018. The ReConnect Program provides loans and grants to construct, improve or acquire equipment needed to provide broadband service in eligible rural areas.

"We are extremely grateful for HTC's presence and cooperation," said Brian Tucker, Georgetown County's Director of Economic Development. "This will bring amazing opportunities to our communities and will push us forward on the digital scale."
