Georgetown County: Firefighter receives Medal of Valor

D567

Georgetown County issued the following announcement on September 22.

Emergency responders and a civilian who recently rescued a man and a dog from a submerged car were recognized for heroism on Sept. 22. Midway Fire-Rescue presented their firefighter Thomas Doyle with the Medal of Valor for his actions. Meritorious Action Awards were presented to Firefighter Dustin Kilpatrick, Firefighter/Paramedic Steven Vankirk, S.C. Highway Patrol Trooper Adam Marshall and a civilian, Blake Marsh. Other firefighters who were on the scene that day received a Unit Citation Award. They were Battalion Chief Jerry Liberatore, Master Firefighter Santini Washington, Captain Jeremy Skinner and Ben Dussault.

Those honored put their own lives at risk to save a man his dog on Aug. 29 when the car they were in landed in a pond in Litchfield and ended up completely under water. Firefighters arrived on the scene within four minutes. Trooper Marshall and Marsh were already in the pond working to free the victims. Firefighters used hydraulic tools to get the car door open and rescuers were able to get the unconscious man to safety. His dog swam to shore.

The event could have easily been a tragic one, said Midway Chief Doug Eggiman. See Eggiman's full remarks and the awards presentation on our YouTube Channel.
