Georgetown County issued the following announcement on October 5.
In observance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Sheriff Carter Weaver invites you to a Candlelight Vigil on October 21 at 11 a.m. at the Georgetown County Sheriff's Office at 430 North Fraser Street. Speaker Aleia Jeffery will talk about the effect domestic violence has had on her family. Her grandmother, Georgetown County resident Hazel Daniels, lost her life in April of this year. The event is sponsored by the Crime Victim Advocates of Georgetown County.
The serious problem of domestic violence was first observed nationally in October of 1981 as a “Day of Unity.” Since then, Domestic Violence Awareness Month has been observed each year to shed a spotlight on the problem and unite advocates across the nation in their efforts to end the abuse. The Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office and other crime victim advocates in our county join forces every October to hold a candlelight vigil to honor those who have succumbed to or survived the violence.
