Georgetown County Chamber of Commerce: Tidelands Health, Encompass Health plan new inpatient rehabilitation hospital in south Horry County

3 0

Georgetown County Chamber of Commerce issued the following announcement on October 8.

Tidelands Health and Encompass Health are seeking state approval for the construction of a 36-bed inpatient rehabilitation hospital within the planned Tidelands Health Carolina Bays Hospital in south Horry County.

Upon approval, Tidelands Health Rehabilitation Hospital, an affiliate of Encompass Health, will be the region’s third inpatient rehabilitation hospital operated by Tidelands Health and Encompass Health. Like Tidelands Health Rehabilitation Hospital at Murrells Inlet, located inside Tidelands Waccamaw Community Hospital, and Tidelands Health Rehabilitation Hospital at Little River, Tidelands Health Rehabilitation Hospital at Carolina Bays will provide a broad array of inpatient rehabilitation services.

“Inpatient rehabilitation hospitals are a critical component of our region’s continuum of care,” said Bruce Bailey, Tidelands Health president and CEO. “Bodies are healed and lives are restored every day at our rehabilitation hospitals in Murrells Inlet and Little River, and we look forward to working with our partners at Encompass Health to bring this critically important service to the people of south Horry County and surrounding areas.”

The planned “hospital within a hospital” represents a $28.2 million investment in the community and, upon completion, will be staffed by approximately 65 employee partners. A certificate-of-need application for the project was submitted to the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control today.

Tidelands Health has already received a certificate of need for the 36-bed Tidelands Health Carolina Bays Hospital, to be constructed at the interchange of Highways 31 and 707, and is awaiting approval of a certificate of need for Tidelands Health Extended Care Hospital, a 24-bed long-term acute care hospital also to be located within Tidelands Health Carolina Bays Hospital. Tidelands Health Extended Care Hospital will provide care for medically complex patients with advanced medical needs who require extended hospital stays to support their recovery following serious injury or illness.

The new Tidelands Health Rehabilitation Hospital will serve patients recovering from numerous conditions, including stroke and other neurological disorders, hip fractures, brain injury, spinal cord injury, amputation, complex orthopedic conditions and COVID-19. Patients will receive a minimum of three hours per day of therapy for five days each week, 24-hour nursing care, access to advanced technologies and frequent visits by an attending physician during their stay.

There is a significant need for additional inpatient rehabilitation services in fast-growing Horry and Georgetown counties. SCDHEC has indicated 40 inpatient rehabilitation beds are needed to serve the region.
