Georgetown County issued the following announcement on October 19.
After a year-and-a-half-long hiatus due to the pandemic, Georgetown County Environmental Services is bringing back its semi-annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection. The event is set for Saturday, Oct. 23, from 9 a.m. to noon at Waccamaw High School.
As usual, residents are invited to bring for disposal their unwanted hazardous household items such as paint, oil, batteries, household cleansers, non-commercial pesticides and fertilizers. The event will also again include a paper shredding truck, allowing residents to safely dispose of personal documents, such as bills and other items containing personal information.
Without these events, residents have to either take household chemicals to the landfill on Highway 51 for proper disposal, or often choose to dispose of them improperly. By bringing the semi-annual collections to the Waccamaw Neck, proper disposal has been made significantly easier and more people are willing to take advantage of it, according to staff.
More people practicing proper disposal habits keeps dangerous chemicals from leeching into the ground and ending up in the water supply.
