Georgetown County: COVID-19 cases cause another delay in Georgetown County youth basketball league

25

Georgetown County issued the following announcement on January 24.

Georgetown County Parks and Recreation announced today that its Jr. NBA 3v3 Youth Basketball League will be delayed by at least one more week as a result of COVID-19.

The league was supposed to begin practices on Jan. 18, but an increase in the number of COVID-19 cases resulted in a shortage of both coaches and staff to run the league. Hopes were that practices could resume this week, but that won’t be possible staff determined this morning. Approximately 700 students are in quarantine this week, based school district statistics. Additionally, the Parks and Recreation Department continues to experience staffing issues as a result of COVID-19.

Hopes are that the league can begin having practices on Jan. 31, with games following one week later. Games missed due to COVID-19 delays would be tacked on to the end of the season.

Basketball free play programs were also supposed to begin last week, but have been delayed again.

“We’re hoping we’ll be in a much better place next week,” said Loren Wallace, Parks and Recreation Manager. “But the important thing is making sure we limit the spread of COVID-19 as much as possible and kids can get back to school first and foremost.”
