Students invited to participate in national art contest

47

Students in Georgetown County have an opportunity to show off their love for their local government at the national level – and win a $100 gift card in the process. In an effort to bolster civic education in schools and communities, and educate youth on the role of county government, the National Association of Counties is hosting the “I Love My County Because” Art Contest in conjunction with the celebration of April as National County Government Month.

NACo and county leaders are spreading the word about county roles and responsibilities, which are often unknown or misunderstood. By inviting children and young adults across the country ages 18 and under to create artwork for the 2023 “Counties Matter” calendar, NACo hopes to raise awareness about programs and services that impact people’s lives every day.

Submissions must be original artwork created in the current schoolyear by one student. Artwork must present a county activity that shows how “Counties Matter” and be inspired by the sentence “I love my county because…” Artwork should be horizontal 11-inch by 8.5-inch (PDF or JPEG). Deadline for entries is 11:59 p.m. May 1. Submit entries online at naco.org or mail original artwork to the attention of Leon Lawrence III at: NACo, 660 N. Capitol St. NW, Suite 400, Washington, D.C. 20001.

Winning artwork will be featured in a NACo calendar, which will be distributed to NACo members nationwide. Winners will also be announced in NACo’s flagship publication, County News, and their artwork will be displayed at NACo’s headquarters in Washington, D.C.

“We encourage all students across Georgetown County to submit their artwork to the ‘I Love My County Because’ contest,” said Angela Christian, Georgetown County Administrator. “We would love to see a local student featured nationally and to have local students better understand the role of their county government. These students will be taxpayers one day, and it is vital that people understand and be part of their local governments.”

County officials are also available to talk to classes about the important work counties perform, from waste collection and recycling to fire and law enforcement protection. Anyone interested in having a county representative talk to their class – either in person or virtually – should contact Jackie Broach, Georgetown County’s Public Information Officer, at jbroach@gtcounty.org or (843) 545-3164.
