Tidelands Health is investing in the health care workforce by awarding scholarships, both to current team members to further their education and to graduating high school seniors pursuing health care careers.
In all, the health system recently awarded nearly $30,000 in scholarships to five employee partners and four graduating seniors. The scholarships, part of the McRoy and Jo Skipper Initiative for Learning and Teaching at Tidelands Health, are funded through donations to and fundraising efforts of the Tidelands Health Foundation.
“Our health system is committed to investing in current and future health care professionals to serve our rapidly growing region,” said Busy Kimball, associate vice president of human resources operations. “The annual scholarship program is part of our comprehensive strategy to recruit and retain skilled and passionate professionals to meet the growing demands for health care in our region.”
Each team member received a $5,000 scholarship to continue a course of study in a health care field at an accredited college or school. This year’s recipients: Rochelle Scott, pursuing a nursing degree at Williamsburg Technical College; Madison Graham, pursuing a physician assistant degree at the Medical University of South Carolina; Audrey Feasel, pursuing a master’s degree in business administration at Virginia Wesleyan University; Jennifer Brown, pursuing a health care administration degree at Southern New Hampshire University; and Taylor Kelley, pursuing a family nurse practitioner degree at Walden University.
The four graduating high school seniors each received a $1,000 scholarship to pursue a health-related degree. This year’s recipients: Mia Doerr, Waccamaw High School, pursuing a nursing degree at Francis Marion University; Imunique Herriott, HCS Early College High School, pursuing a pharmacy degree at the University of South Carolina; Andrew Botros, Academy of Arts, Science and Technology, pursuing a biology/pre-medicine degree at Wofford College; and Jak Kelley, Georgetown High School, pursuing a pharmacy degree at The Citadel.
“We applaud this year’s talented scholarship recipients for their drive to learn, grow and serve others,” Kimball said. “We are proud to provide this financial support and encouragement as they pursue their career goals.”
The scholarship program is funded through donations to the Tidelands Health Foundation and the annual Lights of Love holiday campaign.
The scholarships are part of Tidelands Health’s multifaceted strategy to help prepare the current and future workforce to meet the growing demand for health services in the region. In addition to the scholarships, the McRoy and Jo Skipper Initiative for Learning and Teaching provides nursing internships, leadership development of team members, mentorship programs and more.
