Heather Moree, a nurse in the critical care unit at Tidelands Georgetown Memorial Hospital, and Morgan Kranz, a nurse at Tidelands Waccamaw Community Hospital, were honored after receiving heartfelt nominations applauding their skill, compassion and devotion in caring for others.
At times, it’s not just the care they provide for patients but also the extra steps they take to comfort patients’ loved ones and chip in to assist their team members that leave a lasting impression.
It’s those little things, in part, that prompted the wife of a patient who spent his final days at Tidelands Georgetown to nominate Moree for the award.
Moree always asked if the patient’s relatives needed anything and often brought items including chairs and blankets to make the relatives more comfortable – things they didn’t even ask for but she brought for them as she provided excellent care for the patient.
“She also took care of me,” the relative wrote in the nomination. “She never left the room that she didn’t ask did I need anything, and after a while, it became, ‘Have you eaten?’ or ‘Have you slept? You must take care of yourself.’ So very kind.”
The small gestures, which the family said the nurse just sensed they needed, made such a difference and left the relatives with gratitude and love during a difficult time.
“She held me when I cried and left me when I just needed to be alone with him,” the wife wrote. “I personally don’t know what I would have done without her. I was there 24 hours each day, and she treated me with such kindness and care and yet at all times, she did her job with grace and competence.”
The other DAISY winner, Kranz, has made quite an impression in her young career. She completed her nursing degree while working at Tidelands Health throughout the pandemic, facing challenging situations as a new graduate as if she were a seasoned nurse, her teammate wrote in the nomination.
“Her devotion and warmth throughout difficult times was very impressive,” the team member wrote. “She never hesitated to help a co-worker out and always managed to complete her own tasks to perfection.
“This nurse works on night shift, and it is a common occurrence for her patients to greet the oncoming day shift by telling them that they will be a tough act to follow. This nurse is thorough but also incredibly efficient. She is cheerful and caring as well. Her clinical decision-making is always on point.”
Tidelands Health presents DAISY awards twice a year. The national DAISY award and the DAISY Foundation were established by the family of the late Patrick Barnes, who died of a rare autoimmune disease at the age of 33, to honor his memory and recognize nurses around the country who deliver extraordinary care.
“Our patients, their loved ones and our community benefit from the caring nature, expertise and genuine desire to help others that our nurses demonstrate daily,” said Ashley Capps, vice president of nursing and operations at Tidelands Health. “Nurses truly make a difference in so many lives, as Heather and Morgan have shown in earning the prestigious DAISY award.”
