Learn about managing medications following a stroke at next Tidelands Health support group meeting

Stroke survivors often take multiple medications to help reduce the chance of another stroke. Learn more about managing these medications at the next stroke survivors group meeting July 20 at Tidelands Health.

Brent Meck, a clinical pharmacist specialist at Tidelands Health, will share tips and answer questions about common medications many stroke survivors take regularly. Up to 80 percent of strokes may be prevented with a combination of healthy habits and medications to control blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol, according to the American Stroke Association.

“Managing new medications following a stroke can seem overwhelming,” Meck said. “It’s important to be knowledgeable about the medications you’re taking and understand the importance of continuing prescribed medications to keep you healthy and reduce the chances of another stroke.”

The group meets Wednesday, July 20, at 4:30 p.m. at Tidelands Health Neurological Rehabilitation Center in Waccamaw Medical Park East, Suite 102, 4033 Highway 17 in Murrells Inlet. Anyone in the community can attend the free meeting.

Tidelands Health launched the stroke survivor support group about six months ago as part of a growing number of services and new level of care being offered through the health system’s expanding neurosciences program.

The support group, which meets the third Wednesday of every month at the same time and place, provides a comfortable environment for stroke survivors and their caregivers to share experiences and find support through open discussion. Tidelands Health experts share their knowledge and guidance during the meetings, which focus on topics such as emotional wellness, fall prevention, swallowing difficulties and the benefits of rehabilitation therapy.

“We want stroke survivors and their loved ones to know all the resources that are available and have the support they need to live healthy, productive lives,” said Jessica Ault, stroke program coordinator at Tidelands Health. “We encourage stroke survivors in our community who have questions or simply want the comfort of being with others going through the same journey to join us for a group meeting.”
