For more than 30 years, Help 4 Kids has been working to keep children in Horry County happy, healthy and fed.
Founded by Barb Mains, who went looking to do a little volunteer work with two friends after Hurricane Hugo and quickly learned there were people who needed support. That day in the aftermath of Hurricane Hugo changed everything for Mains and led to the formation of Help 4 Kids, also known as Backpack Buddies.
The 100% volunteer organization is our Nonprofit of the Month sponsored by South Atlantic Bank.
They collect donations of food and, while school is in session, discreetly places them in children's backpacks, ensuring they have food to eat at home.
Help 4 Kids also collects clothing in kids sizes 6 to 14 including pants, shirts, underwear, socks, pajamas, hats, coasts, scarves, mittens and gloves.
The nonprofit serves about 3,000 children weekly.
