Conway, SC (January 19, 2023) - The South Carolina Supreme Court will hold court proceedings and oral arguments on the Coastal Carolina University campus Feb. 8-9.

The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held in the Coastal Theater, inside the Lib Jackson Student Union.

Each of the four cases will have limited seating and require a separate admission ticket. Tickets are available through the Wheelwright Box Office.

The court’s appearance at CCU is made possible by CCU’s Edgar Dyer Institute for Leadership and Public Policy. Each day will feature two authentic cases, giving students, faculty, staff, and community members an opportunity to observe the judicial system at work.

“The work of the five Justices, their clerks, and staff is important and has impacts on all of us living in the state,” said Jacqueline Kurlowski, director of CCU’s Edgar Dyer Institute and organizer of the event. “The court’s flexibility and willingness to travel to the University and Horry County demonstrates their desire for transparency and accessibility to the judicial process for us all.”

The court will hear the following cases at CCU:

• Feb. 8 at 10 a.m.: State v. Randy Wright

• Feb. 8 at 11 a.m.: State v. Travis Latrell Lawrence

• Feb. 9 at 10 a.m.: Ani Creation Inc. v. City of Myrtle Beach

• Feb. 9 at 11 a.m.: Doe v. Keel

There is no late admittance to the courtroom. Please allow adequate time for parking and security checkpoints. No still or video cameras or recording devices will be allowed.

The Edgar Dyer Institute for Leadership and Public Policy believes that individuals across the community, state, and nation can improve governance and solve problems by working together on a basis of mutual knowledge and understanding. The institute’s mission is to engage CCU students in active learning opportunities while creating public value, untangling public problems, and finding public solutions that have positive and measurable impacts.
